Ambient particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of sizes and types of particles. Exposure to airborne particulate matter adversely affects human health. In this paper, sources of particles are summarized, and epidemiological and toxicological studies on health effects of particulate matter are introduced. Control strategies and cost-effectiveness evaluation of PM are also introduced. Developing optimum control strategies, which likely include a variety of control options and cost-effective preventive measures, is urgent. The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance and suggestions for future researchers.
