aftcr a short surey covering the colution of sintcred materials the influences of carbon on micro-structures and properties of wrought steels are discussed. The basic metallurgical knowledge has showed for a long time that the optimum properties depdending on alloy additions can be achieved, only by a correct control of carbon content. The similarities and the differences between proous and fully dense steels are analysed. From this comparison it comes out that carbon control in sintered steels is a critical factor for achieving the highest properties. The possible methods to make sintered allys are herein exposed and the reasons for using mixes containing graphite are presented. The thermodynamic bounds concenring carbon equilibria during sintering are discussed and the possible interactions with various controlled atmospheres are examined.
