This paper is about the development and verification of regeneration of potential energy in hydraulic forklift trucks. A conventional main lift system has been investigated for energy efficiency and compared to an alternative simple system allowing for regeneration of energy when lowering the forklift. Based on a dynamic model of the complete system; mechanical system, hydraulic system, frequency converter and AC motor, performance was evaluated and critical events identified (for example cylinder shift in the telescopic arm). Control strategies were developed utilizing different feedback signals. The overall conclusion is that the efficiency can be increased considerable.
