A mechanical failures diagnosis is the problem of finding out the root cause of process malfunctions. This paper presents a new method of mechanical failures diagnosis based on virtual test theory, which integrates some new technologies such as VP, VR, network, visualization etc. The basic concept of the virtual test is introduced, as well as the VT architecture and so on. Furthermore, the paper has studied the framework of modelling and analyzing mechanical failures in a virtual test environment and the method of modelling mechanical failures. The study will provide the support to establish a workbench, in which the test engineer could diagnosis and maintain a machine in the virtual test environment. They not only can see the connections, properties and movements of components, but also could watch the failures and explore the failures generation mechanism. Besides, a remote mechanical failures diagnosis and maintenance system is designed, whose structure and advantages are introduced. Finally, some expectations end the paper. This paper makes some explorations for new method of mechanical failures diagnosis.
