Air-powered engine (APE) is a zero emission one for vehicle propulsion that uses high pressure air as the power. Displacement and stroke-bore ratio (SBR) are two basic parameters in designing a reciprocating piston APE, so that finding out their effects on the performance of APE is very important. In this paper, the research on these two parameters is presented. The model of APE is built up based on the thermodynamic analysis. A prototype APE converted from a single-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine is tested for checking the accuracy of the model. Good agreement of computation results is obtained between the model and the prototype engine. Then, based on the model, the study is carried out with simulation and the results are discussed.
