Sensorless Condition Monitoring of a Submerged Pump

A new sensorless condition monitoring of a submerged pump in a hydraulic system on the basis of motor current signature analysis is proposed. Theoretical analysis and experimental verifications confirmed that the malfunctions of pump can be detected in a cost-effective and noninvasive way by employing the current of the driving electrical motor of pump as the monitoring signal. The relationship between the pump conditions and the driving motor current are discussed first. Then the monitoring strategy using intelligent pattern recognition technique, particularly neural network, is studied. Moreover, the experimental verifications are conducted on a Hydraulic System Condition Monitoring Test Rig to validate the proposed monitoring method. The benefits of the proposed approach are multiple. Firstly, condition information of pump is embedded in the current signal of its driving motor and it is a sensorless and intrusive method. Secondly, it is cost-effective to perform system maintenance using this approach. Finally, the proposed method has potential use for any pump configurations driven by electrical motors.
