This paper develops a relationship for calculation of debris-flow discharge in the view of probability. The relationship contains the rainfall return period and the hydrogeological and topographica parameters, such as the runoff coefficient, watershed area, sediment concentration, length and velocity of over-land flow, and the horizontal length and elevation difference of a considered stream reach. Considering the uncertainty of the parameters, we derive an equation for design discharge of debris flow in term of safety probability, based on the first-order second-moment method. The equation is then used to estimate the design debris-flow discharge in Fushing village at Hualien county in Taiwan.
