In the petrochemical industry,carburization corrosion often occurs in carbonaceous environment which leads to the performance deterioration and reduces the service life of metal materials.The stress induced by carbon diffusion is one of the main causes of failure for components.In the present paper,the diffusion process of constant surface concentration of carbon from inner wall to outer surface was studied based on the Fick's law.The diffusion-induced stress formulas in a cylindrical structure were derived using solid mechanics theory.The distribution of radial stress,circumferential stress and axial stress was simulated by self-developed program,respectively.The results show that the carbon concentration increases with an increase in carburization time.The radial stress is always compressive and increases with time.With the development of carburization the circumferential stress is compressive near inner surface and tensile near outer surface.The circumferential stress at the inner surface has the maximum value and decreases with time extended.However the circumferential stress near outer surface increases with time.The distribution of axial stress is analogous to circumferential stress.The analysis also shows that the ratio of outer radius to inner radius of cylindrical structure has an effect on the distribution of carbon concentration and stresses.At last,the results are applied to the process of carburization of ethylene cracking furnace tubes of HP40-Nb.
