Academic institutions are facing unprecedented challenges in research funding, student interests, industry needs, and global economic impacts. It is clear that engineering college needs to renew its mission and purposes. We must cultivate students and faculty in a team-oriented and interdisciplinary environment. Research activities need to address □ntellectual gaps?in both science-based discovery and industrially relevant challenges. To lead the engineering innovation in the new millennium, we must face some of the most complex issues in our society: 1. What is science of our current engineering systems, and how does it progress? 2. What are technologies in our current engineering systems, and how do they progress? 3. How does scientific and technological progress interact in today's engineering systems and impact societal change and economic development? 4. How can the technological function of a business be managed to foster technological innovation for competitiveness and opportunity?

The collaborations analysed span academia, civil society and government, from the grassroots to the national and global levels. The featured case studies are explored through the perspectives of both researchers and their partners in civil society and policy.
