The emergence of internationally recognised standard communications protocols for building control systems along with the latest advances in microchip and communications technologies has opened the door to real opportunities to implement true smart building technologies in the healthcare sector. The current wave of new hospital projects under design to replace the country's stock of ageing dilapidated and inefficient buildings offer the best chance in decades to deliver smart solutions that benefit the construction process, facilities management, the environment and patient care. In this paper we will cover the protocols themselves and how they can be implemented to achieve currently available benefits and also lay the foundations for future technological development throughout the lifespan of the hospitals.
