摘要

Following the maxim that "a ship is its own best life boat" the International Maritime Organization has set up the Safe Return to Port (SRTP) program. In our article we transfer this program to merchant ships and put professional navigators in the centre of attention. We present an interdisciplinary empirical approach to assess navigators' demands. By the means of a group discussion we illustrate the process of generating controversial issues among engineers and navigators which later on served as guiding research questions. In subsequent studies we investigated some of these questions through ethnographic interviews and an observational study in a bridge simulator. Our results reveal valuable insights into navigators' perception of the SRTP program. These results can be used to draw inferences concerning the equipment and operation of an emergency bridge.
