A new data-hiding tecnique which makes use of chaos synchronization is proposed. Data such as watermarks for copy-right protection can be sparsely embedded in data and recovered using identical chaotic oscillators synchronized with a reference signal derived from the data itself. We show that sequences of pixels or pixel blocks for embedding and recovering watermark data in images can be selected by this method. The sequences are synchronized to the image via a reference signal derived from the image itself, so that watermarks cna be recovered from segments of the image even if the image is shifted or cropped. We combined this method with modified "patchwork" method and confirmed the robustness against attacks which crop orshift the image.
