This application oriented paper mainly focuses on designing an inexpensive and accurate range scanner on automatic CAD model acquisition of a manufactured part by using the 2-D image to digitize the 3-D shape. The object was passed at the speed of 4cm/sec through a single linear laser strip and forty continuous images were captured into the computer host frame memory for later procesing. The lateral resolution, 1.696 mm; depth range, 0.44 mm to 7 cm; depth resolution, 0.22 mm and profiling rate, 166 ms per frame are achieved by our experimental set-up. The major problem in laser stripe scanner design caused by specula reflections can be improved by our approach.
