摘要

Wavelet packet transform based image coding has some advantages over the common wavelet pyramid algorihtm for image coding. In the past a few years, efforts have bene made to get more efficient image coding algorithms by use of wavelet packet transform. Most of the existing approaches result in computation intensive algorithm in the process of best basis selection. In this paper, a simple criterion for the best basis selection was proposed and implemented to reduce the computation burden greatly at a cost of slight PSNR loss. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach is a effective and efficient one in practice.
