A Mobile Ad Hoc Routing Protocol for Metropolitan Bus Networks

As the public bus network in the metropolis is very dense, we can connect all the public service buses as nodes in an ad hoc network and use this network to collect and distribute traffic information. This paper proposes a new position-based routing protocol for such metropolitan bus networks, which makes use of street information like street map and bus route information to identify a stable geographic route with high connectivity for data delivery. In addition, the proposed protocol uses mobility prediction to improve the geographic forwarding. Furthermore, the proposed protocol can cope with partitioned networks and route messages across partition boundaries. Preliminary simulation result shows that it achieves significant performance improvement compared with other similar routing approaches.
