A truly ubiquitous environment should always provide the user with a uniform, high-level service abstraction, while devices and services adaptively find a way through configuration hassles and semantic mismatches of concepts. Ubiquitous devices, and the services they offer, should be able to discover each other's functionality and take advantage of it, particularly when not designed purposely to work together. This paper describes initial steps in designing PeerProbe, a framework for semantic and context-aware service discovery in ubiquitous P2P environments. PeerProbe aims to enable semantic interoperability among heterogeneous peer entities by enhancing existing service discovery architectures with Semantic Web concepts and technology. In particular, ontologies are extensively employed as a means of overcoming the heterogeneity problem.
