Transaction-oriented systems are mostly based on the functionality of multiple legacy backend systems. To allow customers to access and to use functionality in these backend systems different architectural approaches can be used. They differ from each other regarding the place where integration takes place. We describe the different layers of web architectures and identify where application logic can be located. Based on this model we identify four basic architectural approaches and evaluate these approaches against technical and business criteria.
