The aim of the present paper is to discuss the binding international undertakings in the field of nuclear safety with special reference to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (the Joint Convention). The main questions considered are the following: 1. What led to the adoption of these instruments? 2. What benefits are expected to derive from their implementation? 3. What, in particular, led to the adoption of the Joint Convention? 4. What may result from it in the longer term? 5. Has a binding international safety regime now been achieved?
