The procedural oriented modeling and design developed for facility layout management system simulations have evolved into such complicated system that the applied design practices appear inadequate to support further enhancement and maintenances. The existing system is becoming increasingly complex and inflexible. The major obstacles stem directly or indirectly from the conventional function-oriented software development methodologies. To overcome the drawbacks of these methodologies, efforts have been focused on the investigation of a generic facility layout model based on the object oriented concepts and the implementation of this model with object-oriented programming techniques. As an illustration of this approach, the object modeling technique is used to develop a facility layout under manufacturing environment. The applicability of the procedure is demonstrated through a series of test problems under equal as well as unequal areas with pickup/drop-off positions on the periphery of the machine blocks. The results obtained through the present modeling and research indicates that the computational time is less in case of object-oriented design than that of procedural oriented programming under equal area of machine. Incidentally, the results are just reverse in case of machine blocks under unequal areas. The developed facility layout object model is capable of supporting a diverse set of machine blocks on the real world concepts.
