A Study of Surface Quality of Backwardly Extruded Short and Hollow Tubes with and without Lubrication

In metal forming processes, lubrication is generally considered to assist in reducing sliding friction that leads to fine surface finishing products. In reality, the quality of a finishing product varies with the setup of the process, the material properties of the workpiece, the geometry of the workpiece and the product, the deformation speed, and the deformation aspect ratio, etc. Study of backwardly extruding 60Sn40Pb cylindrical rods with different initial surface asperities to blind-tube under dry or wet condition indicated that: (ⅰ) for small and irregular asperities, wet condition gave better surface quality; (ⅱ) for large and irregular asperities, dry condition tended to provide favourable surface condition; (ⅲ) for simple regular asperities, no distinctively favourable condition was found; (ⅳ) for large and regular asperities, the condition varied with the deformation speed; etc.. This paper reports such study and envisages the relevant mechanisms involved so as to facilitate the proper control of the forming operation for accomplishing good quality tubes.
