Study on the Shear-compression Stresses of Stitched Foam-core Sandwich

Stitched foam-core sandwich is a low-cost structure panels with carbon fiber face sheets, a closed-cell foam core, and through-the-thickness Kevlar stitching. Through-the thickness stitching is proposed to increase the interlaminar strength and damage tolerance of composite sandwich structures. For the purpose of obtaining the failure mechanism of the new material, a finite-element modeling was used to study the core stress distribution of stitched foam core sandwich under four-point flexural loading. The model results show that the shear stress distributing was not the same as unstitched foam core sandwich due to the existence of the stitches. An experimental method for common sandwich structures was introduced to test the stitched foam core sandwich, and the analysis indicates that the method can ensure a more homogeneous shear stress field. Using this method, controlled combinations of shear and compressive stress can be generated within the stitched foam core, allowing evaluation of the shear-compression failure envelope with different given failure criteria for foam-core and stitches.
