Prediction of the creep lives of the boiler tube bends used in fossil-fuelled power generation plant with sufficient accuracy is currently one of the challenges for maintenance engineers. This is because the manufacturing process causes the tube cross-section becomes oval producing complex effects on the creep behaviour of the bend. Based on the reference stress method, this paper presents a pragmatic model that may be used to obtain the creep life of tube bends with various degrees of ovalities subjected to uniform internal pressure. To reduce the cost of the analyses, the present investigation uses the elastic-plastic finite element analyses of the toroidal vessels to compute the limit pressures and the reference stresses of the oval tube bends. The investigation shows that: (1) toroidal vessels can be used to reliably compute the reference stresses in the oval tube bends and (2) the reference stress method presents an economical approach in predicting the creep lives of the oval tube bends subjected to uniform internal pressures.
