In order to achieve a general modelling method and simulation platform for torsional analysis of vehicle's powertrain system, the theory, of torsional vibration modelling methods for vehicle powertrain is built. The modelling method and platform provides users with standard torsional vibration element models of multi-branch gear system, simple and complex planetary gear set, shaft, gear pair and other rotating elements. With these element models, the torsional vibration models for most of the powertrain systems can be built and assembled with gear pair and shaft coupling. The capabilities of the method and platform includes free vibration and forced response analyses. In the present paper, the free vibration analysis model are built and the corresponding eigenvalues or eigenvectors for powertrain systems are obtained . The validation of the general modelling and platform are verified with a few examples. Three typical calculation cases from references are used to verify this general modelling method. The comparisons of eigenvalue or eigenvector with the results in the references are made. According to the compared results, the conclusion can be made that the new modelling method and platform are proved general, reliable, practicable and reusable.
