Assembly is an important stage in the process of product manufacturing, and effective assembly design tool can greatly improve the efficiency and quality of product assembly design. Digital assembly design system (DADS) developed in our work provides some assembly design tools for designers and engineers to preassemble product, analyse assemblability of product, and plan product assembly process. In this paper, the DADS system architecture and its main function are firstly introduced. Some key technologies, including digital assembly simulation environment, human-computer collaborative assembly sequences rapid planning, and assembly tolerance analysis, are then researched and implemented. Digital assembly simulation environment provides users with a 3D design environment. With the environment, designers and engineers can operate part or component to realize product assembly simulation. Different from traditional strategy of assembly planning, human-computer collaborative assembly sequences planning divides the assembly sequences planning process into two levels planning, which increases the speed and availability of assembly planning. Assembly tolerance analysis assists engineers checking the rationality of assembly tolerance distribution. Based on the above study, the DADS system has been applied effectively to a test case-universal transmission device. The three significant characteristics of DADS are as follows: (1) the simulation environment does not need the supporting by those expensive VR software and hardware, and the assembly model avoids the drawbacks of CAD system assembly model. (2) Assembly sequences planning tool is suitable for complex product since more experience and knowledge of specialists are used fully in it by interactive operation. (3) As a prototype, DADS system has been integrated with CAD system by PDM to share geometry and non-geometry information of product.
