After studying the characteristics and statistics of VBR MPEG video source in ATM networks based on a typical movie, this paper proposes and analyzes a new model for MPEG VBR video sources, called RAR(1) model. This model has three parameters, and the parameter estimation formulas are deserved. The results of simulation of this model show it is almost close to the real data and has a lot of pinnacles of scene transmission which is a remarkable specialty of MPEG video source. In this model, the instantaneous auto-correlation of MPEG-1 video source attenuates sharply at the beginning and fluctuates afterwards, which is different to index attenuation of auto-correlation in the videoconference service, the statistics of this kind of auto-correlation fits to the real case, and the marginal distribution is better than Gaussin and Gamma distribution under some condition.
