This paper presents a novel hierarchical block-ring based multicast scheme, the HBO multicast scheme, on wormhole-routed mesh systems. The multicast is path-based. For the scheme implementation, a block ring chain structure using multiple edge-disjoint block rings, in a level by level and bottom-up manner, is hierarchically constructed first. And then the source (and the intermediate) nodes efficiently deliver the multicast messages along block ring paths to the destinations in a parallel and top-down manner. Mathematical analysis and simulation results demonstrate the proposed HBO scheme is superior to existing path-based multicast schemes, in terms of average start-up times, average traveled path length and average communication latency.
