LOFAR is a distributed wide area sensor network, which is used for radio astronomical observations as well as for geophysical and agricultural applications. This giant signal processing machine contains a central processor facility with an equivalent capacity of >20 Tflops based on hybrid cluster computer techniques. The cluster geometry is optimised for near realtime processing of streaming data. Switch fabric technology is used for scalability to 1024+ nodes. Flexible usage of the cluster is provided through an application development framework that provides run-time mapping of logical application steps and connections to actual available hardware resources. Quality of service of the processing facility is optimised through mapping algorithms that adapt to the actual status of the resources in the cluster, thus providing performance optimisation, load balancing and fault tolerance.
