Icebergs present one of the most dangerous natural phenomena for shipping, development of oil-gas fields and operation of offshore structures. It is known that icebergs of the Northern Hemisphere are smaller than their analogues in the Southern Hemisphere. One should not however, underestimate the iceberg danger in the Barents and Kara Seas, since glaciers situated on their islands and archipelagos can produce icebergs of comparatively large mass-size characteristics. In recent years, active exploration of the shelf of the Arctic Seas is carried out. From 1999, specialists of the AARI (Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute) undertake engineering surveys and scientific studies in the northeastern Barents Sea where the largest in the world Shtokman gas-condensate field (SGCF) is located. One of the objectives of ice studies is assessment of iceberg danger, while analysis of archived data is a necessary stage for its solution.
