A dimensional analysis of a submerged piece of cold ice is performed and discussed.It is argued that this is relevant for the scaling of model-basin iceridges. Five dimensionless numbers are presented; Bi = hL/k,Fo = kΔt/ ρcL~2,Ja = cΔT/l, l(Δt /ΔL)~2 and ΔL / L. It is impossible to maintain all thesenumbers in a basin test (when using water to create the ice). The initial icetemperature is identified as the key variable. The Biot number is reduced whenreducing the size, but it may be compensated by increasing the initial ice temperaturecompared to full-scaled. Further work in necessary and under way.
