Relationships were established between ice drift, currents under the ice, and the near-surface winds, based on data collected along the Sakhalin northeast (NE) coast. The assumption was made that the ice drift can be described as the sum of the current under the ice and a wind-induced ice drift. The wind-induced ice drift was computed by a linear regression analysis between the near-surface winds and the ice drift relative to the near-surface current (about 3~5 m under the ice). It appears that the current largely controls the ice drift along the Sakhalin NE coast. The wind-induced ice drift is in the range of 1.5% to 2.0% (= wind factor) of the near-surface winds. The ice draft data obtained with the ice profiling sonar (IPS) has been used to distinguish between different ice types. For pack ice conditions, the wind factor was found to be between 1% and 1.5% while for newly formed thin ice the wind factor was higher, between 2% and 2.5%.
