This paper describes a model of determining nonlinear temperature profiles within sheets of level ice. The time varying surface temperature of the snow that covers an ice sheet is used as a major input for the model. A finite difference routine is used to solve the heat conduction equations for ice and snow. The Stephan's boundary condition is used to account for the ice growth. Both the specific heat capacity and the thermal conductivity are assumed to vary inside the ice as a function of salinity and temperature. The main features of the model are described and example calculations are shown. Applications to calculate an integrated strength of the ice sheet are discussed.
