Hydraulic pumps are used in many construction and agriculture applications vehicles. Many low pressure applications like engine lubrication and automatic transmission pumps can be serviced with pumps with as-sintered gears or gerotors. Some higher pressure pumps might use higher density and/or heat treated gears. Many pump applications are for continuous duty. Some pumping applications require high pressure continuous duty with an intermittent higher pressure. These extra demands can tax the longevity of a pump. Improvements in P/M technology can enable a pump meet a demanding application with improved durability. The pumping application described here has Powder Metallurgy gears and requires 4,000 psi system pressure during some intermittent operations. The initial pump gears made from heat treated FN 0205 at 7.4 g/cm~3 minimum density could not reliably perform in the field without the gears failing from fatigue. Changing the gears to carburized FLN2 4400 at the same density enabled the pump to easily meet the pressure without gear failures. Under lab test conditions the cycle life went from gear failures in 62,000 cycles at 4000 psi, to no gear failures in 10,000,000 cycles at 4,500 psi.
