Congestions in transmission systems are limiting the activities of energy markets. Methods for relieving congestions are demanded without building new transmission lines. Time-synchronized phasor measurements provide a dynamic view of a power system. By collecting these measurements in a central unit, this capability is used to set up a wide area monitoring and control system. This system opens a broad field of new applications, beginning with the monitoring of stability limits and critical system states, up to remedial actions against instabilities and control actions by network control equipment. The paper introduces dynamic rating with respect to thermal limits and voltage stability, network controllers and wide area protection as methods to increase the usable transmission capability. The methods are evaluated within economic case studies considering both, market and technical uncertainties with a Monte-Carlo-Simulation.
