The pre-dominant stumbling block in bulk power transmission is the limitation of the power transfer capability of the existing transmission lines. Due to open market trends globally, it is becoming essential that the existing installations/facilities be optimally utilized to reduce the expenditure and improve the power quality. Solid-state devices like thyristors, GTOs, and IGBTs are used to-day to achieve the said objectives. Power electronic devices for faster control and reliable operation are categorized under the generic name of Flexible AC Power Transmission System (FACTS). FACTS controllers can be used to increase the power transfer capacity of transmission lines. It also aids in fast voltage control in the event of contingencies and also facilitates desirable power flow in the desired line. FACTS technology is not a single high power controller but a group of controllers, which can be employed individually or collectively in a staged manner to control inter-related parameters. There are three main FACTS streams i.e. Series Compensation, Shunt Compensation and Phase Angle Regulation. The paper encompasses FACTS controllers in general with particular emphasis on TCSC.
