Compensation of reactive power in a power distribution network of a power utility and industry plays a major role in reducing distribution loss and maintaining constant distribution voltage. The paper presents the results of simulation studies, development of prototype and experimental studies on distribution STATCOM (DSTATCOM). A prototype DSTATCOM has been developed and installed at the incoming sub-station of BHEL, Corporate R&D, Hyderabad. The simulation and experimental results show that the developed DSTATCOM is capable of maintaining unity power factor at the receiving substation, both during steady-state and transient conditions.
