This paper describes the use of a system for effective quality control for the installation of rockbolts used in the roof support of mine roadways. The system utilises measurement of the dynamic response of the rockbolt to an impulse, signal processing and artificial intelligence techniques combined with a numerical model to provide information about the effective bonded length of the rockbolt and estimates of the load carried by the rockbolt. This allows the mine operator to ensure initially that the installation specification is being met and then to monitor the load in individual bolts as a safety measure.
