摘要

The availability of production equipment is a key factor contributing to the successful operation of any industrial process. However, within Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) modern maintenance techniques are perceived as an additional cost and problematic. Using case study analysis, this paper considers current maintenance practices in SMEs and the key factors underpinning their particular maintenance strategies. The barriers to the implementation of modern maintenance practices are identified and a new model to help overcome these barriers is presented. The model allows the cost of maintenance to be identified and aids the development of a modern maintenance strategy tailored to their needs and based upon a Return on Investment basis.
