A clinical trial of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) for glioblastoma patients has been in progress at thernHigh Flux Reactor (HFR) at Petten since October 1997. The JRC (as licence holder of the HFR) must ensure thatrnradiological protection measures are provided. The BNCT trial is a truly European trial, whereby the treatmentrntakes place at a facility in the Netherlands under the responsibility of clinicians from Germany and patients arerntreated from several European countries. Consequently, radiological protection measures satisfy both Germanrnand Dutch laws. To respect both laws, a BNCT radioprotection committee was formed under the chairmanship ofrnan independent radioprotection expert, with members representing all disciplines in the trial. A special nuance ofrnBNCT is that the radiation is provided by a mixed neutron/gamma beam. The radiation dose to the patient is thusrna complex mix due to neutrons, gammas and neutron capture in boron, nitrogen and hydrogen, which, amongstrnothers, need to be correctly calculated in non-commercial and validated treatment planning codes. Furthermore,rndue to neutron activation, measurements on the patient are taken regularly after treatment. Further investigationsrnalong these lines, include, dose determination using TLDs and boron distribution measurements using on-linerngamma ray spectroscopy.
