Temperature sensitivity (Q10 values) of soil respiration in Chinese forests

Q_(10) is the most important index and is widely used as temperature sensitivity of soil respiration. Several review articles have compiled Q_(10) values on a global scale; however, there is no compilation of the Q_(10) values for Chinese forests. In this study, published Q_(10) values of soil respiration in Chinese forests were examined (n=70). Our objectives are: 1) to calculate the frequency distribution of Q_(10) values for soil respiration; 2) to determine the methodological influences on Q_(10) values; and 3) to discuss the latitude distribution of Q_(10) values. We found that the Q_(10) values range from 1.16 to 5.56 (n=70), the median Q_(10) value is 2.57, with 24.29% Q_(10) values falling between 2.5-3.0 and 95.71% falling between 1.0-4.5, and the Arithmetic mean of Q_(10) value is 2.72(SD=0.9966). The arithmetic mean, geometric mean and median of Q_(10) values obtained by different CO_2 analysis methods have the same size disciplinarian (IRGA > Gas chromatograph analysis > Static alkali/Soda lime absorption). Gas chromatograph method and IRGA method for CO_2 analysis yield a significantly higher Q_(10) value than Static alkali/Soda lime absorption method (p < 0.05), and the Static alkali/Soda lime absorption method underestimates the Q_(10) value separately about 40.61%, 42.92% than Gas chromatograph method and IRGA method. As the temperature sensitivity increases along with the latitude, a linear equation obtained by linear regression analysis between latitude and mean Q_(10) values of each latitude is the following: y = 0.0708x + 0.2828(R~2 = 0.69, n=13).
