摘要

These days, changes in contemporary business environment drive all companies to improve their business competitiveness. Improvements in supply chain management have been focused as important issues. To create new business opportunities, information' systems have been broadly used. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is defined as an information system that is used to input, store, retrieve, manipulate, analyze, visualize and output geographically referenced data or geo-spatial data, in order to support decision making for planning and management. Undeniably, most of supply chain data are related to geography. Locations of the supply chain components such as suppliers, production plants, warehouses, distribution centers and customers are the needed data to be considered for supply chain decision-making. In a smaller scale such data are plant layout, production flow and material flow, they are all related to geography. The value of GIS lies in enabling users to integrate different sets of data through a common geographical reference system. GIS is a powerful tool that able to enhance the decision-making system, resulting in strengthening the company competitiveness. This study concludes an application of GIS in the business' supply chain in the more understandable and applicable way. The application is categorized into two aspects. One aspect is considered according to the decision areas in supply chain, while the other aspect is considered according to the GIS functions for the clearer implementing idea. Besides, other feature related to costs of the application is presented as well. Some examples of implementation are illustrated latterly.
