Soil erosion is a major problem in the Yellow River Basin. Conservation agriculture which features reduced or zero tillage, mulch retention, crop rotations and cover crops, offers a possible solution. In this experiment, no-tillage and conventional tillage were compared in the Yellow River basin of Inner Mongolia. The results showed that: (1) In 0- 5, 5 - 10, 10- 15 and 15- 20 cm soil layers, the soil temperature under conventional tillage was lower than that of no-tillage in maize, millet, glutinous millet and oat fields; In 0- 10 and 10 - 20 cm soil layers, the soil water content of conventional tillage was higher than that of no-tillage. (2) For maize and glutinous millet, the soil organic matter content of no-tillage was higher than that of conventional tillage. For millet and oat, the soil organic matter content of no-tillage was lower than that of conventional tillage. For millet and oat, the soil total N content of no-tillage was higher than that of conventional tillage. For glutinous millet and maize, the soil total N content of no-tillage was lower than that of conventional tillage. For all crops, the soil contents of total P, dissolved N and readily available P of no-tillage were higher than those of conventional tillage. (3) The trial showed a yield decrease because no-tillage method was applied in the first year and no mulching. The maximum yield decrease (16.7%) was for glutinous millet, while the minimum (8.1%) was for maize. The yield decrease of millet and oat was 14.7% and 10.4%, respectively.
