A 'Giffen Good' - The Analysis on Substitution and Income Effects of China's Higher Education

The change in price of a good has two effects, substitution effect and income effect. The substitution effect is negative to the change in price, whereas the income effect is a result of different categories of good. If the income effect is same to the substation effect, the good is defined as normal good, but contrarily it is inferior good. Commonly, as to most of inferior good, the total effects are still negative to the price change because the substitution effects are large than the income effects. But the income effect may theoretically be large enough to cause the demand curve for a good to slope upward. We call such a good a Giffen good. The education can be regarded as service industry. Among it, higher education is distinct from compulsory education and ordinary secondary education, so whether or not can higher education be regarded as one kind of good that people who take education need. If can, does it fit the law of demand? What kind of good is it? What differences does it discriminate from the same categories good and why? Using six years data from 1996, the year our country formally puts the reform of the charge rule of higher education into practice, to 2001, this paper sets forth and analyzes the above-mentioned questions, combining with theory discussion and positive analysis.
