The influence of cold rolling and solution treatment on precipitation in Al-(1-3)Mg-0.25Mn-(0-0.4)Cu-0.15Si (wt%) alloys was investigated. After solutionising at 550℃, all alloys showed age hardening, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed the occurrence of precipitation reaction(s) in each alloy. After solutionising at 500℃, all Cu-containing alloys showed precipitation hardening; for Cu-free alloys, only the alloy with 1wt% Mg showed precipitation hardening, and no substantial precipitation hardening was observed for alloys with Mg content 2wt% or higher. This observed suppression of age hardening with increasing Mg content for Cu-free alloys was analysed with reference to the undissolved Mg_2Si intermetallics formed during solution treatment. These intermetallics were characterised using FEG-SEM and EDS. For the age hardening alloys solutionised at 500℃, both the time to peak ageing and the amount of precipitation hardening decrease with increasing cold rolling reduction.
