Concrete literally provides the shop floor for the vast majority of industrial enterprises and in the UK alone, involves the use of some six million cubic metress per year in the construction of ground supported slabs. Since the 1970's, there have been a number of significant developments in design and construction methods, necessitated by more onerous requirements for economy, loading, surface regularity, crack control and reduced wear. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of thickness design methods and includes alternatives to the classical work of Westergaard (1925) and the use of fibres (steel and polypropylene) as a replacement/supplement to fabric reinforcement. Comprehensive test data is included.
