The limit load is an important input parameter of many aw assessment procedures. The accuracy of limit load predictions has a signi cant effect on the accuracy of predictions based on these procedures and, therefore, on the safety of structures. In the present paper, an upper bound limit load solution is given for a round welded highly undermatched bar subject to tensile loading. The mis-match factor is assumed to be so small that plastic deformation occurs in the weld only whereas the base material is elastic (rigid). Such values of the mis-match factor are typical for a class of modem materials used in the aircraft and other industries. The kinematically admissible velocity eld proposed takes into account the singular behaviour of the real velocity eld near velocity discontinuity surfaces. Using this velocity eld and the upper bound theorem a limit load is found assuming Mises yield criterion.
