Laser shock peening is a novel mechanical surface treatment for fatigue life extension of metallic materials; it creates a much deeper compressive residual stress layer than that from shot peening, offering the prospect of very effective crack growth retardation. Tests on aircraft aluminium alloy have shown that LSP can produce large fatigue life extensions. However, some tests revealed significant technological risk in cases where the LSP processing is not well controlled; in these cases LSP may cause internal cracking, which results in a reduction in fatigue life. The main factors promoting the internal cracking in LSP aluminium alloy are laser power (or intensity) and poor transverse material properties. Careful control of the process can prevent the occurrence of such problems and allow exploitation of the potential life extension.
