A characteristic 'map cracking' pattern has been observed in an increasing number of old structures. This long term (20 years) deterioration is due to the alkali aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete between active silica often present in aggregate, alkalis present in cement, and water. This leads to the formation of a gel and the consequent expansion causes cracking and thus weakening of concrete. Reductions of up to 50% in the tensile strength and 60% in elastic modulus have been detected. This process is of general concern throughout the concrete construction industry but the present work is directed towards the application to dams.
