The City has displayed its commitment to addressing its informal settlement or slums challenge in various ways. It has proactively developed an effective and innovative programme to address its settlements, it has developed its Housing Plan and it has successfully implemented the first of many phases of the Slums Clearance Project. The City plans to engage communities in its projects and create meaningful partnerships with the various alliances advocating the people's housing process. The City is also determined to alleviate poverty and create employment opportunities for its citizens. With a Housing Plan advocating a delivery target of 16,000 housing units per annum over the next 12 to 15 years, Durban has charted a course towards achieving its vision of a slum free city.
