摘要

Let me start this presentation by expressing my profound gratitude to the organizers of this conference for inviting me to present a paper on the theme "Sustainable Urbanization and Social Development". I most sincerely appreciate this honour. Also, permit me to express my sincere thanks to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) for sponsoring my participation at this conference. This presentation examines the trends of urbanization in Nigeria and reviews some of the strategies adopted in dealing with emerging problems with particular focus on community-based urban infrastructure and services upgrading. Essentially it deals with the issues within the context of our national level initiatives and the broad policies designed to facilitate social and economic development. The paper has been structured into two main parts. The first part examines the trends of urbanization and highlights major urban issues. The second part reviews various strategies adopted to address the critical urban problems and issues and notes major lessons learned in the process.
