摘要

Turkey, in other words Anatolian peninsula, exotic, colorful, many-faceted, romantic, contrasting, ever-old and ever-new is located at a point where three continents, Asia, Europe and Africa meet. But, it is neither European nor Asian, nor African and nor Middle Eastern, having traces and tastes of all, yet distinct from them. This particular peninsula which forms a multi-functional bridge between modern West and fabled East, is also the land piece where eastern and western lifestyles, oriental and occidental traditions, Islamic and Christian cultures intermingled. Despite her richness and diversity in natural and particularly in cultural resources suitable for tourism and her closeness to the well known European tourism destinations, tourism, as an industry, has started quite late, around 1980's, in Turkey and then it grew very fast reaching 20 million arrivals in the year 2005. In 1970s, as the share of the tourists employed by industrial sector is gradually shifting to the tourists employed by service sector, tourism industry had to experience a radical structural change. This did not mean a single and simple shift, but meant a series of shifts, such as; from mass tourism to individual tourism, from hotel centered tourism to authentic product-centered tourism, from sun-sea-sand tourism to nature and culture tourism, from one-dimensional tourism to multi-dimensional tourism, from physical recreation to mental recreation, etc. If it is to be expressed in one single phrase, we may say "diversity in tourism". The most prominent but least realized outcome of these shifts happened to be the disintegration of the concepts of the tourism and hotel management which were frequently considered synonymous before 1970s. Being located at the gateway of the diversity and being opened into tourism at the time when diversity became a major paradigm in tourism, a study on the 25 year's experiences of Turkey in the field of tourism, from a success story perspective, may be inspiring and leading for the similar new Asian countries having similar potentials and constrains.
